Getting that extra zoom range over the old standard of 100-300mm zoom lenses certainly help with providing more chances for exciting and fun photos, and naturally it has optical image stabilization. Curiously enough, Sony even emphasize that users of this lens can extend the range to 800mm with a teleconverter.

Well, just keep in mind that that will covert the aperture just as much as the zoom range, but that’s what high ISO rates are for on modern DSLRs.

Sony is marketing this new zoom lens as ‘the perfect hobbyist’s super-telephoto zoom lens.’ There’s nothing wrong with that description. Sony could create a lens that would offer more light in, but then it would cost 200% more, and it would usually be larger too.

With a weight of 654 g, the lens is not too heavy or too large, which means it can actually be used often, which is what it should be doing for hobbyists.
